The Commodification of Medicine: Health Care and the Free Market
While the forces that lead to poorer health outcomes and shorter life spans among people in the United States are undeniably complex, the deeply pervasive and uniquely American commitment to the free market inevitably shapes the way health care is delivered and accessed in the United States. Basic principles of a free market system include competition, voluntary participation, transparency of information, and the determination of prices via the forces of supply and demand. When health care is considered a commodity like any other to be traded in the free market, it is believed that competition will result in a better product, since practitioners and researchers will compete with each other when it comes to quality, price, and consumer satisfaction in order to make a profit.10 Patients, as âconsumers,â will then choose the best product for their needs based on price and quality, thereby encouraging price reduction and quality improvement.
